She spent the next couple of minutes staring at the screen. Despite what Brett said about not telling Zara that Lucy had a secret, what if she did?
“How could I have been so stupid?” Lucy muttered.
Chapter Fourteen
Rather predictably, the PSA that won centered around not leaving dogs in cars. Lucy could’ve called that victory even if the show brought in a blow-up doll as a surprise contestant, and the doll drew the dogs topic. Heck, the PSA wrote itself. A dog suffering in heat was bound to be the most touching.
Crystal had done the expected. Nothing special. She didn’t deserve to win. She devised a scenario in which a woman (herself) spotted a dog in a car. Pant, pant, pant went the dog, and the dog’s owner (Zara) came strolling by. The PSA was filmed inside, with warehouse air conditioning, and the dog was never in the car more than a minute at a time.
Crystal waited for Zara to get inside the car and start the engine—and thus, the air conditioning—before she tapped on the window.
“Excuse me, ma’am,” Crystal said worriedly.
Zara cocked an eyebrow and rolled the window down. “Yes?”
“Did you know that even if the temperature outside is seventy-five degrees, the temperature inside your car can reach as high as one hundred and eighteen degrees?”
Zara frowned. “That’s nonsense.”
“It’s true. Seventy degrees outside is too hot to leave your best friend in a car.” Crystal handed over a pamphlet.
The next camera shot zoomed onto Zara’s face—gradual realization, gradual horror as she absorbed the pamphlet’s message.
The next scene showed Crystal alone. She explained the effects of heat on dogs and what to do if you saw a dog trapped in a car. Lucy had to admit Crystal came alive on the screen in a way she didn’t in person. In person and despite her red hair, she was on the plain side. Onscreen and with the aid of makeup and stylists, a certain indefinable something asserted itself. Crystal developed a sort of swagger, a sort of confidence. Her voice managed to strike the right mixture of horror, calmness, reassurance and school-marm. She wasn’t an actress, either. She worked for her family’s restaurant in Chicago. In any case, Crystal’s on-screen demeanor shouldn’t have been enough for her to deserve the winning votes.
“Well, that’s that,” Lucy muttered as Nate announced Crystal’s win. Even Zara and Gene had voted for Crystal. Every damn person had except Lucy. Time was running down. Lucy needed all the minutes she could get with Zara to solidify their bond before she lowered the big ol’ “I’m straight” anvil.
Lucy, contrary Lucy. She voted for Madison’s video, which, like Lucy’s, needed extra graphics or camerawork that would come later to truly make it shine. Madison’s topic was on adopting a shelter animal versus a breeder’s animal, and Lucy had tried and tried various scripts for her own PSA. In the end, she still preferred her first attempt, so she tinkered with that a bit. And ran with it.
